Swallow-Tailed Kite

Juvenile swallow-tailed kite. The series of pictures seen here were made On July 9, 2013 in the Newport subdivision of Crosby, TX where a number of swallow-tailed kites nested this year. I found at least a dozen of the birds, including many young of the year, resting and preening in a group at about 8am before dispersing to feed. This bird can be identified as a juvenile by the relatively short outer tail feathers and a little buffy color on the body. These kites have clearly established themselves as Texas residents and what a beautiful addition they are.
