Lewis's Woodpecker

Lewis's woodpecker. This sequence of photographs of a Lewis's woodpecker was taken on Dec 12, 2013 in Brewster County about 10 miles south of Alpine, TX. The bird has been in residence here for about two weeks. Also in the area are Townsend's solitaires, acorn woodpeckers, western and mountain bluebirds, and phainopeplas. Most seem to be feeding on juniper berries except perhaps the Lewis's woodpecker which is catching insects on the fly. On the morning these photos were taken it was in the middle 30's and so the Lewis's slept in and then spent a lot of time puffed up trying to keep warm while waiting for insects to fly.
